Helpful Mahogany Doors Information

Is mahogany a good wood for doors?

If you're looking for a high-quality solid wood door, Mahogany is a great choice. Mahogany is a strong, stable hardwood that performs well in a range of climates, making it a reliable choice for exterior and interior doors. Additionally, it resists warping, swelling, and shrinking over time, which helps maintain the door’s structural integrity.

How do I protect my mahogany door?

Protecting your mahogany door depends on your climate and how the door is finished. Our mahogany doors are offered either unfinished or factory finished. Factory finished mahogany doors will come with a protective finish using your desired pre-selected stain color, while unfinished mahogany door units will require prep and finishing on-site.

If you're choosing to finish an exterior mahogany wood door yourself, choosing a high-quality varnish or exterior-grade polyurethane with UV protection will provide the best protection.

Do I need an overhang for exterior mahogany doors?

If you’re installing an exterior mahogany door, we recommend an overhang that’s 4 to 6 feet deep—or at least half the height of the door. For example, a 96-inch tall door should have an overhang of at least 4 feet.

It’s also important to have a minimum of 24 inches of coverage on either side of the door unit to provide proper protection.

If your existing overhang doesn’t meet these guidelines, consider using a fiberglass door instead, as it offers better durability against constant exposure to the elements.
