What to Know about Classic Storm Doors

When you think of classic storm doors, you might think first of the classic screen door, which always seem to be banging in the wind in old movies. While the terms are often used interchangeably, there are subtle and not-so-subtle differences between the two. For example, while a screen door is a self-explanatory simple door with a screen, a storm door is more sophisticated. You would choose a classic storm door if you were looking for:

  • more security
  • protection against weather
  • added energy efficiency

Either choice, classic screen door or classic storm door, could be appropriate for your home, depending on what you're looking for. But if you want the best of both worlds,  you should choose a classic storm door.

A Door with a View

There are three basic types of classic storm doors, which can be differentiated by the size of the glass panels inset within them. The first kind has a glass and screen panel only at the top, with the bottom of the door remaining solid. Because they have a large solid portion at the bottom, they're ideal for entrances that get a lot of foot traffic. They are also ideal for installing dog doors, if you'd like.

The second kind is similar to the first, but features a larger glass panel inset and a smaller corresponding solid bottom panel. These allow more light and ventilation than the first kind, but still have protection against heavy traffic at the bottom. The third kind are full-view storm doors, which feature full glass panels set in a frame. These are most appropriate for front entries, but can, of course, be used wherever you choose.

Measuring Accurately

Determining the size of your new classic storm door is one of the easiest home improvement tasks. You will take the measurement similarly to how you'd measure for other doors. First, make sure that everything is flush. Then make sure you have the mounting surface for the door. This may vary by manufacturer, but a good rule of thumb is 1 inch wide and 1 inch deep.

Then measure the width inside the frame where your new door will hang. Take the width measurement in three places: top, middle, and bottom. Write down the smallest measurement; this is what you will use. Then measure the height. Again, measure inside the frame. You will also take three measurements here: the left, the center, and the right. Once more, you will use the smallest measurement.

Maintaining the Storm

If you've just installed the door and it's making squeaks or squeals, the hardware is likely tight. You can allow it to loosen on its own over time, but if you just can't stand the sound, you can use a lubricant, like a silicone lubricant, to ease the squeaks. Periodically, your door's closer may need to be adjusted. There are telltale signs when it needs it—for example, if the door won't close all the way on its own.

Adjust it as needed and keep it clean. If the closer is pneumatic, make sure to keep everything clean and clear of oil, dust, or other debris. In addition, keep the hinges oiled or lubricated as necessary. Check the door at least at the beginning of every season for any damage or disrepair.

Questions And Answers

What is a storm door stop?

How To Replace Storm Door Handle

Having a storm door is a great idea. If you already have one on your home, it is important to keep an eye on the handle. This part of these doors often breaks quicker than other parts of the door. The best thing to do if you are having issues with your current handle is to put in a whole new storm door handle. This is a very simple project and doesn’t take very long either.
