Check Your Doorway’s Specs

Determine Which Security Screen Door Works For You
Once you have measured the space for your new door and have determined the handing, you can start to think about some other factors before you order. You want to be sure your door is safe and best for your situation, so be sure to ask around. Be sure to ask plenty of questions at the hardware store, and do a lot of online research. You might even consider asking safety experts what they would suggest for your particular project or location.
Once you have received your ordered door in the mail, you are almost ready to start installation. However, you want to be sure you have instructions, and you should take time to look over them before starting the project.
Make Sure You Have All Necessary Parts And Tools
While you have the instructions in front of you, lay out all of the parts and tools. Make sure you have everything you need to install your door, and also ensure that no necessary parts have been forgotten or left out. Since you have not started, it is much easier to go purchase anything extra you might need for installation.
Install Handles And Locks
Now is the time to install your handles and locks. Some doors come with handles and locks already installed, but if this is not the case for your door, they don’t take long to install. Just attach the interior and exterior backing plates to the door. Then you will put both the inside handle and the snib lever into the interior backing plate that you have already placed on the door. Keep the snib lever in place as you connect the handle assembly and backing plate. Make sure your handle stays horizontal and is pointing toward your door’s hinges. Now, the handle rod will slide through then lock body and into the interior handle. Now, the second handle should be attached in the exterior backing plate. Make sure everything is straight and fit the pieces completely together before securing the assembled handle in place.
In order for your door to open correctly, your hinges have to be placed in the correct location, so correct measurements are very important. The location where the hinges are required are usually already marked on the door. However, if the locations are not marked, most hinges are placed 7 inches from the top, 11 inches from the bottom, and the third should be placed directly in the middle of the entire door’s length.
Cut The Z Bar
The Z bar should be cut 3/16 inches shorter than doorway’s width.
Lift The Door Into The Doorway
Now, have a partner help you lift the door into place. Make sure everything will fit and ensure that it works correctly before moving on to the next step.
Drill Into Place
Before you fully secure the door, you want place a screw into the top hinge’s top hole. Also place a screw in the bottom hole of the bottom hinge. Make sure the screws completely penetrate the Z bar and molding. Check the door’s swing and the gap around the door. It should have a measurement of around 3mm so that the strip can fit beneath your door.
Install The Door’s Header Piece
This will be installed above the door and should be installed with a screwdriver to minimize damage.
Install The Door’s Expander Piece
This should help to catch any debris and keep it from entering the home. This goes on the bottom of the door and can be drilled into place. Check your door’s spacing and make sure it still opens and closes properly.
