doorbell fix

How To Fix An Old Doorbell

Fixing a doorbell, in most cases, is a relatively quick, simple and inexpensive job that you can complete on your own. If your doorbell does not ring, there could be four possible problems with it. It could be the chime, the transformer, the button, or the wiring connecting them all. You can track the culprit easily and make the fix.

You do not have to worry about working with electricity as a majority of the doorbell circuitry is usually low-voltage and will not give you any shocks in case you make contact with the wires. A transformer considerably reduces the typical 120-volts carried by many electrical circuits to just ten to sixteen volts needed to operate a doorbell.

We have a useful how-to article to walk you through the process of repairing an old door.

How To Fix A Door Knob

At some point, almost every door knob or handle comes loose. The most common sign of a door knob that needs some attention is it starts to jiggle or pull away from the door whenever the handle is used to open or close the door.

Since they are one of the most frequently used items in a home, it shouldn’t be a surprise that handles need some attention from time to time. Luckily, fixing a loose door knob is a breeze and requires very few tools. In fact, nearly any homeowner can handle this task on their own with items they already have on hand. Here’s what you need to manage this project.

Mortise Lock

Mortise Lock

Mortise locksare a kind of locking mechanism that is installed or fitted in the door itself. For a door to be able to hold a mortise lock, it should have a minimum width of 45mm or 1.75 inches. Mortise locks were immensely popular and are found in old building doors. A majority of mortis locks have a lock body. The body is placed in the mortise cutout of a door. Other components include a lock trim like door knobs, pulls or lever and a strike plate. Although there is no denying that mortise locks can reduce the structural integrity of a wood door, a majority of security experts still believe that a mortise lock is much stronger, durable and versatile compared to its cylindrical counterpart. As a mortise lock is installed inside your door itself, even the most skilled intruders would have a very tough time forcing your door open. This lock system is neatly cut into the edge of your door and you can only see the faceplate when your door is ajar. Mortise locks are also made of a variety of levers and notches that makes them extremely difficult to pick. Therefore, it is important to choose a good mortise lock with at least five to six lock levers to ensure your door is virtually impossible to pick or open without the key. And in case you are still not convinced about the efficacy of having a mortise lock installed in your house, we will discuss some more advantages of these locks. read more

Average Priced Handlesets

If you are looking into alternatives for your standard door knob, you might want to consider purchasing a handleset. There are many different types of handlesets available on the market. Most people purchase a handleset with a deadbolt for the front door, and depending on your needs, you will have your choice of lock. Consider the handleset as more than just the turn knob, because it has the lock built into it but as noted can include a deadbolt that will make one unit rather than two separate pieces. The single piece handleset can be found in many different metals so just look around and you’ll find the perfect one for your home. You could purchase other handlesets for other areas of your home, but they are most often used for external doors. There are also inactive handlesets that are not functional, that you can purchase just for decoration. These can be used on interior doors such as bedrooms or closets if you don’t need to lock them. If you do need to lock them, like on a home office or a special storage closet, they are available to you. Handlesets are a great option if you are looking for a safe and attractive alternative to your standard knob. read more
