Solid Core Interior Doors Versus Hollow Wood

At first, it seems like deciding between solid wood and hollow core interior doors should be simple.  Real wood should the clear decision, right?  This is not necessarily true.  Over the years manufacturing innovations have resulted in alternatives to products that are traditional on an equal, or in some cases better, level.

Some examples of this are framed fiberglass windows and wood engineered flooring, they certainly are a run for the money against the originals. Solid doors are fantastic, and the person who owns your home next will love that you purchased them, but they are far from everything.

When you think about the number of doors that are in your home the choice may be more difficult due to the price difference that is found between hollow and solid core doors. So let's look at what each type of door has to offer.

Sound Blockage

Doors that are hollow core are not really hollow at the core.  Between wood veneer or thin press-board, you will find cardboard honeycomb.  The cardboard acts as a sound block, though not well, and it also provides the outer shell with structure.

Many of the production homes that are built today have interior doors that are hollow core.  These doors are not great when it comes to sound blocking or a feel that is solid to the door.  If you are looking to save money however and replace many doors in your home then hollow core might be more of what you are looking for.  If money is not an issue than it is easy to see the best benefit comes from a solid core door.

Appearance

Solid wood doors are the best when it comes to appearance, but again, worst when it comes to price.  A wood panel door can look and feel like merely one solid wood piece, but it is in fact not.  The six-panel door has been used for many ages and it is constructed of individual mullions, panels, rails, and stiles.

When painted and built, your wood panel door will look like it was milled from only one piece of wood and the various indentations look routed in.  This is one thing to keep in mind when making a decision, the solid door is always going to result in a better appearance, but is it worth the extra money that you will spend?  To some it will be more than worth it, others would prefer a lesser expensive even at the cost of an appearance that is not as appealing.

Self Installation

Solid core doors are much heavier than solid wood doors and hollow core doors.  Particle wood is a material that is very dense.  It makes for a harder installation but will give you years of performance more than a hollow core door will.   Unless you have architectural requirements in your home that result in the need for a solid wood door, a solid core door will get you a great door at a price that is more reasonable.

Whether you choose solid core or hollow core for your door make sure that you take the appropriate measurements.  Many standard sizes are available, but you still need to know the width and the length of your door to ensure it is the right fit.  There are some doors that will need to be customized, so if you don't see the size you are looking for then ask about custom doors.

How To Install Hinge Pin Door Stop

No one wants holes or nicks their walls. We all want the cleanest looking walls we can, but everyone has had a door open too far and too hard. This often results in damage, and it obviously is not possible to patch and paint every time this happens. The easiest and most efficient option is to install a door stop. If you have lightweight interior doors, the perfect solution is a pin door stop. You would probably need a fixed post stop for any heavier doors, as the pin door stops are intended for only lightweight doors. However, if this is an option for you, they are very simple and inexpensive to install, and they are available at most hardware stores as well as online.

If you don’t have much space inside of your home, which happens to just about everyone, it is time to do something about that. You need a storage solution that might just be easier than you thought. Just about every house has a little attic area. Generally, it isn’t cooled or heated and doesn’t have much space for you to move around but you can store some things in it such as luggage, decorations, out of season clothing and more.

However, you need an easy access to your attic area and by learning how to make an attic door, you will have your solution. If you already have an older staircase to your attic area, these may be a bit dangerous. By following the steps here, you can make your attic door bigger and easier to get through. You will only need to enlarge the doorway, put it an easier staircase and some steel cables. There will even be a handrail so it is safer as well.

Person Installing A Prehung Interior Door

How To Install Interior Prehung Doors

Doors are precision instruments and should consistently and easily snap into their latch, clear their jamb, and swing almost effortlessly on their hinges. The fine and precise tolerances required to achieve this level of performance explains why installing a pre-hung interior door is often deemed a true measure of a carpenter’s skill.

A pre-hung door simplifies and expedites the installation process, but let me tell you that the term pre-hung is actually a misnomer. The door and jambs need to be carefully adjusted and calibrated to account for any shortcomings in a wall’s frame.
