Top Three Shopping TipsDoor Latch

Door latches might not seem that interesting, but they are an integral part of your door. Knowing a little bit about them will help make buying one a lot easier. The first thing to know is that standard door latches come in three common varieties.

Learn the differences between these three, so you can figure out which one is right for your home. You can also find out the difference between the two most common installation types.

1

At the Drive-In

The drive-in door latch is named for the way it's installed. It's the easiest door latch to install because you don't have to chisel out any part of the door. You can just drive the latch into the cross bore hole—the hole on the edge of the door farthest away from the hinge side. Then you can install the door knob or handle. If there is only a 1” cross bore hole there and the rest of the edge is smooth, then a drive-in latch is fine. However, if there is an indentation around the hole, where part of the door has been removed, then you'll need to install one of the other kinds. These latches are often used because they're easy to pop in and you usually don't have to prepare the door in any way. However, they're not as sturdy as faceplate latches and they don't usually look as good.

On the Corner

The faceplate latches are differentiated by the shapes of their plates. It's pretty self-explanatory. The rounded corner faceplate has rounded corners, for example, so you can probably guess what kind of corners the square corner faceplate has. Rounded corner faceplate latches are probably more common than square, because the prep is easier. The space for the faceplate is removed using a mechanical router, which is why the corners are rounded. A square corner faceplate, on the other hand, is generally made using a chisel and a hammer. This is typically done on higher-end doors, although you can do this on other doors. You can even replace doors that were prepped for a different kind of latch. Doors that have been prepped for round corner faceplates, for instance, can be changed to square corners.

More about Mortise

Latches or locks come in two installation types, tubular and mortise style. The tubular style is named for its shape. The door latch fits into a tube that slides into the cross bore hole on the edge of the door. The mortise style, in contrast, is named for the preparation. The word comes from an old phrase meaning “to cut a recess.” This is because the mortise latch, which is larger than a tubular latch, fits into a larger pocket within the door. Tubular style latches require little preparation. In fact, many doors will come already prepped for a tubular latch. To install a mortise latch, though, you (or someone else) will need to cut out the recess for the latch with a mortise saw. Make sure you take careful measurements of the lock—they're not all the same size.

Door Latch

When it comes to home remodeling, investigating the type of door latches you have must be considered for a couple of reasons. They are crucial to maintaining your household security as well as all your valuables, but more than that, they keep families safe from harm. It’s best to change door latches whenever it’s time for home renovation.

Door latches can get old over time and if they’re not properly maintained, they can fall prey to excessive wear. In addition, there are also dust and climate factors such as humidity and temperature to look out for because these can also affect the lifespan of a typical door latch. These conditions make it important to change your door latch because, while it’s better to be safe than sorry, in many cases a new one will bring an updated product using current styles and materials, however traditional styles are still readily available.

Each type of latch requires different designs or materials, which is why you don’t have to worry about one not being adaptable to your door. Whether you currently have a Drive-In Latch, one with Round Corners, or one with Square Corners, getting a replacement latch is easy because all types are available to you. For this reason, home owners should be sure to know the kind of latch already installed on your door so that you can get replacements.

Drive-In Latches

Drive-In deadbolt latches are for a door that doesn’t have a mortise. When you opt for remodeling, the drive-in deadbolt latch will replace the standard deadbolt latch that you have. The installation process for this type is fairly simple because you don’t require a chisel or anything of the sort to make a hole in your door. Simply tap the latch into the existing hole after making sure that it’s facing in the right direction. After that, you can install a doorknob or lever as you prefer.

Although it’s easy, it won’t work if your door had previously been installed with a latch that had a faceplate. You can check by seeing if your door has only a clean hole for a latch or if it is otherwise smooth. If you see a larger hole that’s more rectangular, then there are other options to use that will be perfect for your door.

Latch with Rounded Corner Faceplate

A rounded corner faceplate latch is very common and hardware stores use a tool called a router to saw out the material around the crossbore, which is the hole for the latch. The router bit is what allows them to create the rounded edges. The router process takes a little more time than simply installing a drive-in latch. Although the process is longer, it pays off because the rounded corner faceplate looks far better than a simple drive-in latch providing both safety and beauty.

This is a safer option as well because the latch stays in place as opposed to a drive-in latch. This is because its position is held using two mounting screws. A door hardware shop can easily prep your doors for you, but if you’re attempting DIY then you’ll need power tools to create the hole for the faceplate.

security door latch

Latch with Square Corner Faceplate

You may find square corner faceplate latches in the doors available at expensive and high-end stores. Because of their installation procedure, which takes much more time compared to the drive-in and rounded corner faceplate latches, there will most likely be some added expense. The square corners of the faceplate require a proper hole which can’t be done using a machine, but rather must be done manually using a chisel and hammer.

You can adapt holes that already have rounded corners as well by making the square edges, but they’ll lack the finish that you’re looking for. This type of latch wins in terms of style since it gives a clean look that is worth it despite the long time it takes to install so consider how it will work for your home and aesthetic.

The Mission style is known for its sturdy look, straight lines, and hard angles as well as the heavy use of natural wood.
