Top Three Shopping TipsDeadbolts

Most people don’t consider the deadbolt in their door when they’re considering how safe their home is from invasion. The truth is your deadbolt is just as important to your home’s security as an alarm system. They might not be as flashy and noticeable as surveillance cameras and motion sensors, but you should not overlook deadbolts.

Whether you need a new deadbolt or are considering adding one to an existing lock system on your exterior doors, there are a variety of reasons you might look for deadbolts. It's difficult to know what to look for in a deadbolt if you’ve never bought one. We put together the following three shopping tips to help you select the right deadbolt to keep your home and family safe.

Metal Lock With Key
1

Should you choose a single or double cylinder deadbolt?

Deadbolts differ from any other types of locking mechanism because they aren’t spring loaded, which makes them much harder to break into. A deadbolt works by moving a bolt into the lock assembly in the door frame. There are two types of deadbolts from which you can choose. The first is a single cylinder deadbolt that uses a key to unlock it from the outside while the inside has a thumb latch to unlock it. A double cylinder deadbolt requires a key to open it from both the inside and outside. This style is more secure, but you need to have a key located somewhere within reach in case of fire.

What to look for in a deadbolt

Look for the American National Standards Institute’s (ANSI) grade on the deadbolt you’re considering. You want to avoid a deadbolt lock with a grade lower than 1. A grade of 1 means that deadbolt has been tested over 250,000 times opening and closing. It also means its bolt goes at least 1 inch into the door frame. Finally, an ANSI grade of 1 on a deadbolt means it can withstand over 10 blows from a hammer. For the safety and security of everyone in your home, never buy a deadbolt lock with an ANSI grade lower than a 1. Also, be wary of cheap imported imitations that look like expensive deadbolts manufactured in the US, but have no ANSI rating.

Look for UL 437 listing

Underwriters Laboratory (UL) is another organization similar to ANSI that tests and develops standards for various products. The UL 437 rating covers high security deadbolt locks and is the accepted standard for all organizations in the security industry. For a deadbolt to be certified to the UL 437 standard means it can resist certain attacks. For example, find a deadbolt rated UL 437 to know it will resist drilling, prying, picking, and hammer attacks. Making sure any deadbolt you purchase has received the UL 437 rating means the security industry recognizes it as a superior deadbolt designed to thwart a home invasion attempt. If security is a big concern, find a UL 436 rated deadbolt for all your exterior doors.

Deadbolts – What Types Can You Get?

When you are looking at getting safer doors for your home, one thing you must look at is the lock on the doors. You want to make sure the lock provides you with the most protection and security. Some of the most basic locks won’t do that so you need to consider getting a deadbolt to enhance your home’s security to keep everyone safe.

A deadbolt lock will secure your doors, so intruders can’t get in easily. Additionally, if someone wants to break into a home, just seeing the deadbolt will cause them to think twice about trying to get in. That means just the look of these locks alone would give you more protection.

There are various deadbolts that you can invest in. Different materials and finishes are often available for deadbolts too. Here are some of the most popular options that are commonly found:

  • Deadbolt – Single Cylinder
  • Deadbolt – Double Cylinder
  • Deadbolt – Keyless

Find out more about each of these types so you can pick the ones that are best for your home through additional online research. The range of prices, finishes, and level of security will help you make an informed investment in your home’s security.

Deadbolt – Single Cylinder

One of the deadbolts that you can get is called the single cylinder. This is the most popular option of all the deadbolts. The mount attaches to the inside part of your door. The thumb knob will turn left and right, so you can lock and unlock it. The key cylinder goes on the outside portion of your door. This may be the safest way to go and be enough for you because the key must be used to get inside.

It depends on how much protection you want to have. Sometimes even having one deadbolt on your door is enough to keep intruders from trying to get into your home. Keep in mind that this is just one of the options you have when picking out deadbolts for your home. There are other kinds of deadbolts that you could choose from if you would like as well.

Deadbolt – Double Cylinder

Another one of the types of deadbolts that you could pick from is the double cylinder. The mount for these locks is on the inside of your door as with the single cylinder option, but there is a difference with these deadbolts. With the double cylinder deadbolts, there won’t be a thumb knob lock to twist. Instead you will have key cylinders on the inner and outer part of your door. You will need a key to get inside of your home and a key to get out if the door is locked.

The benefit of having a double cylinder deadbolt comes up the most when you have glass windows or panes in the door. With glass windows or panes, an intruder could break it and reach in to twist the thumb knob on a single cylinder deadbolt which they can’t do with the double key cylinder option, so this may be the most secure option for your home.

standard deadbolt interior and exterior parts

Deadbolt - Keyless

You can also choose from deadbolts that are keyless. The mount for these deadbolts would be on the inside of your door. However, there will be a keypad where the keyhole normally would be. You will have a code that needs to be entered to unlock the door and open it. The benefit of the keyless deadbolt is that you won’t need a key at all. This means you won’t need to worry about losing a key, having someone take it, or even being able to “pick the lock” by moving the tumblers.

The other benefit is that you can always change the key code, so there isn’t much chance of someone guessing it. The code can be changed whenever you would like, so rather going to the expense of having the lock rekeyed by an expert, you can do it yourself. The keyless deadbolt is one of the most secure options, so if you are looking for the most protection for your family and home, this may be the best way to go.

Pocket Door Lock

Because they save so much space, pocket doors are a popular option for smaller areas so if you don’t have one yet, it might be that you need to look into having one installed. They are a great choice for closets because they do not take up any needed space if the closet is smaller, like a swinging door would. This makes it much easier to get around and find the things that are needed. However, pocket doors are also great for bathrooms, and sometimes, they are even used as bedroom doors. These rooms tend to be more private, and it would probably be best to install a pocket door lock, so you can prevent any possible embarrassing incidents. While the lock on a hinged door is a traditional option for the door that is typically installed with it, the lock on a pocket door will be something added to many, however it does come standard in some. When you are comparing doors, be sure to consider where it is going to be installed and also how it will be used and if it needs a lock, ensure you include that in the price. read more
