One of the projects you may have around your home that needs done is to replace door hinges. Sometimes the hinges on the doors can get old and squeaky. They may get worn down and you just need to replace them. What are you going to do? Well, in order to replace the hinges, you must first measure them. The certain hinges are used depending on the weight and size of your door. When you are making changes to your home, look for the rusty hinges so those can be replaced.
If you measure correctly, you can get a hinge or hinges that fit the premade crevice in your door jamb. You will need to look at 3 different things to make sure you create a proper measurement. Door hinges may not seem like that big of a deal. However, the ones out your outer doors protect your home from intruders and they keep your family safe. The interior door hinges allow your family members to have their privacy. Don’t overlook this home improvement project. Learn how to measure door hinges today.
To begin measuring door hinges, you will want to open your door. You should then take off all the screws from the hinge that is in the middle of your door. Generally, you will need the Phillips head screwdriver to do this. If your hinge is stuck because paint is built-up, you may need to use the utility knife to pry off your hinge. A flathead screwdriver can be used to do this. After you have done this, the measuring stage will begin.
Now you can start measuring the width of your hinge. You will want to make sure the hinge is open and on a flat area. You will be measuring from one of the sides of your hinge to its other side. The tape measure will be used to figure out this measurement. You should make sure you are doing this at least a couple of times to be accurate with your measuring. The next part of the measuring is for the height of your hinge. This is also done with your tape measure. The most common hinge sizes are 3 ½, 4 ½, 5 as well as 6 inches. These are the sizes that you will most likely find in the stores. Again, you should do your best to measure the height as least a couple of times to be sure your numbers are accurate.
Installing the Door Hinges
Now that you have the width and height of your hinge measured, you will be taking the radius measurements. This is the corner radius is your corners aren’t square. You will put the straight side along your hinge’s top edge. Don’t put the straight side onto the bottom part of your radius. Your measurement should either be 5/8 inches or ¼ inches.
Now that you have your hinges measured, you will need to find the proper spot to place your hinges. Many of the doors will need at least 2 hinges. You will need one around 7 inches from the door frame top and another around 11 inches from the door frame bottom. You will be measuring these distances and putting a mark onto the door’s frame. You should also measure the door and put the mark on the side of the door. This will help to make sure the door gets aligned properly. If you are installing a heavier door, you might have 3 hinges. This will be put directly into the middle of your other hinges.
Now, you should temporarily place the hinges into the proper spot on your door jamb and the door. You will use a pencil to trace outside of the hinge. You will want to make sure the hinge on your jam has a depth that is the same thickness as your hinge. You will want to check again to be sure the outline you made matches the one where the door and the door jamb hinges go. You can use the utility knife to straighten the outline so your placement fits better.
Finishing The Job
After this is done, you will be cutting mortise. What does this mean? It means you will cut wood in your door jamb that is shaped like a hinge. This way your hinge will be put into the door jamb and have a better appeal. It will be stronger as well. With this step, you need a hammer and chisel. Make sure you tap lightly to get rid of wood strips that don’t fit or are loose. Don’t make this deeper than it needs to be or your hinge will be too loose. One hint to remember is that if your chisel if dull, the mortise won’t cut well.
Now, you will need to be marking the location for your screws. You will put the hinge into the door jamb where the mortise was cut. Then you will mark the screw locations with the pencil. You will do this where the screws will need to go on your door as well. Take off your hinges when you have done this step. The next step is to drill some pilot holes. You will need a screwdriver or drill to place holes where the screws will be placed. You should lightly tap these in before screwing so the screws won’t move when being drilled into place. There are screw guides you can use to keep them straight as well.
Now, you can finally put the new hinges into place. You will use your screwdriver or drill to place one fully in at a time. It is recommended to screw them in ¾ of the way until all have been screwed in. If everything seems good, you can finish screwing them in. Finally, you can hold your door where it needs to be (put blocks underneath for support if need be) and the while lining up your hinge plates, put the pins for the hinges into their place. You can then take the blocks out from underneath the door. Try out your door and if it opens and closes well, you are all set.
Now, that you know how to properly measure and install door hinges, you can fix any door in your home. Sometimes hinges need to be replaced. They can become rusty, worn out or loose. Some of them can get bent as well. You want to make sure your home and family is safe and replacing hinges can do this.
