How To Install Hinges On A New Door

Door hinges play a crucial role in your daily life; they provide support to all of your doors. Door hinges, especially on exterior doors, are usually the first line of protection and safety for your family. Inside your house, they provide privacy to your family members. Installing hinges on a new door is a skill that can be easily mastered and can prove to be invaluable for you as a homeowner, especially if you enjoy D.I.Y. projects.

The majority of door hinges are recessed, or surface mounted. It is also likely that you will come across combination models that are partly surface mounted and partly recessed. It is important to start with accurate and precise measurements and always use tools and materials that will ensure superior results.

In case you are hanging a new door on an old frame, you will have to cut fresh hinges on your door carefully. New doors, also called door blanks, feature flat and smooth sides, and do not have any hinge locations. This design will allow you the convenience of placing the hinges where you like on your door so that it matches your existing frame. You could save plenty of money when building or remodeling your home by buying door blanks and cut the hinge mortise on your own. You can do this easily with a chisel and hammer.

How To Remove A Swinging Door

Many homes have swinging doors that separate the kitchen from the rest of the living area. While these can be preferable over standard doors since they allow you to pass through easily when your hands are full, they also come with drawbacks.

A door swinging back into place may strike someone on the other side which may be a big concern in a household with small children. They also make the kitchen feel closed off from the rest of the house and prevent light from streaming in.

Luckily, removing a swinging door is a quick and easy process. So much so that almost any homeowner can get the job done, needing only basic hand tools to complete the work. Here’s what you need to do.

Hollow Core Interior Doors

When you're putting in or replacing interior doors, you typically have two main choices: doors with solid or doors with hollow cores. The difference between the two should be self-explanatory—one door is made of a solid piece of material, while the other has a hollow core. The core isn’t entirely hollow, though. There is a honeycomb of fiberboard inside the door to give it structure and strength. If you’ve got to install several new doors or you’re just looking to replace one economically, hollow core interior doors can be a good choice for you. read more
