The Debate:
Should there be a Doors Store at the gates of Pere Lachaise Cemetary?
The score stands at 26 for ...and 34 against. Some comments are:
Yea Baby!
I have recently returned from a trip to Paris and my second visit to Jim's grave. I was really surprised to find that the whole grave site has been cleared of graffitti and is now really clean, see pic attached.
I did go to the Cafe you mention, but found the staff less than polite. There was a guy selling maps and postcards of the cemetery and of Jim's grave. But I definitly think that there should be a shop/cafe/bar nearby where Doors fans can go that will enhance the whole experience.

YES!! When we visited Paris December 2003, the whole trip was planned as a "Jim" trip. We sought out all kinds of places he had been. Visiting Pere Lachaise Cemetery was unbelievable. However, in the vicinity of the cemetery there definitely should be an official Doors store. We searched the area thoroughly thinking we must have missed something. We even said a Doors store should be in place near the cemetery. We plan to go back to Paris again, another "Jim" trip. Hopefully a store will be in place then.

Yes! I would definitley support a "Doors Store" next to Pere Lachaise. It' sounds cool, and I think it would be a Wonderful place where all of us who love The Doors could meet! Maybe a Sidewalk Cafe too! I think Jim might have liked the Idea of all of us who come to Paris having a Totally Cool place to meet, talk and shop for cool Doors stuff. In a few more years I will be going to Paris and can't wait to see the place! If the shop had Vin, Cafe, and cold beer as well as a luncheon menue that would be totally Awsome! I see Artists painting, and Musicians doing little tributes and a totally safe and cool enviorment. Personally I love to imagine Jim strolling the streets of Paris, stopping in various cafes for a glass of vino! Writing his poems under a shady tree in his favorite park. Can't wait to be there someday!

I'm a 24-year-old student from Konstanz/Germany and I keep visiting Jims grave twice a year in July and December since 2002.
I definitely would be up to a new store or café or whatever else because La Renaissance began to suck.
Of course an official Doors store would be very much appreciated if it offers "things" for reasonable prices and not only sells "things", but is also a kind of meeting point for fans and helps organizing events like concerts or poetry readings in honour of Jim Morrison. a place where everyone enjoys the atmosphere while being on the tracks of Jim in Paris.
I guess the fans wouldn't like a store who just sells Doors memorabilia and stuff because those fans who save a lot of money in order to be able to come to Paris already have all of that fan stuff and they don't like to be "exploited".
Such a store should aim to replace La Renaissance by all means because otherwise the fans will gather there again if prices are cheaper there. It shouldn't be just a simple store but kinda like a café where "the creatures meet" and it should be up to Doors fans from all over the world who try to have a good time just like they would do it in La Renaissance.
I really would be 100% positive if such a store wouldn't aim at a commerical exploitation of Doors fans.
---Jochen

No. As monumental fan of The Doors and Jim Morrison as I am, to open a retail shop selling Doors merchandise, seems extremely disrespectful of the other people who are buried at Pere Lachaise Cemetery. I always felt it was such a fitting last resting place for Jim, to be near other creative geniuses, but to single him out in such a K-Mart fashion, I think even Jim would oppose.
Please do not open this store. This is a very distasteful and tacky idea. Instead, you could always try to find other real estate in Paris for such a store. I believe Doors fans would enjoy visiting the store, myself included, but not at the gates of a cemetery.
---Angela

Although I have been to Paris only once and am planning another trip this year, I certainly would patronize a shop selling Doors-related merchandise near Pere Lachaise. I wondered why there was nothing like that the last time I was there.
---Chris

Sure..been there last january..and the only thing missing is a place to get (buy) something from the Doors. From Jim or any other band member..or the band itself.
---Erik

Yes, of course I support this idea. A mobile hut already exists across the road from the cemetery which sells T shirts, mugs etc. A proper store would attract new fans and service the steady stream of existing fans who visit daily by definition have spent many £/$ to get there and are looking for mementos to take home.
---Nial

Yes! I love the doors /Jim Morrison and we come every jear in Paris to vistit Jim Morrison en and also the Cafe de la Renaissance for some koffee or thee. But for that we first go to Jim.
---Diana

I would most definitely support a Doors memorabilia shop at the gates of Pere Lachaise Cemetry. In fact I will be there on July 3rd 2007 and hope to catch plenty of Doors fans from around the world. Hoping you might be there too!
---Richard

Yes, I would support the opening of this store! I've been to pere lachaise about seven time's in the past four years and i'm only twenty four, What would be great is if it was a bar that sold merchandise, A place where the creatures meet, La Renaissance pray's on doors fans and rips them off. An american or british run store would also be a piece of home while visiting Jim. I hope this could happen because i for one would spend my time here.
---Darran

I would say YES!! They're doing it at ABE Lincoln's resting place (across the street form the cemetery and down a few doors) so why not Jim Morrison? I'm sure JIM was a firm believer in FREE ENTERPRISE, no matter the country.
---Bill

Yes i would support a store as the owners of cafe are unpleasant towards British fans!!!!!!!
---Heather

No Way!
NO! A terrible and "cheesy" idea to a place that still has a shred of dignity.
---Jim

I say NO to putting a store at the cemetary gates. Maybe somewhere close by would be a better answer. Didn't Jim move to Paris to rest and get out of the lime light? There has been enough damage to his gravesite already, I feel this may attract unwanted visitors that may not understand the signifigance of Jim Morrison, and do more damage than good. Thats just my oppinion!
---Jeweliy

No! Enough with the commercialism already! This is Jim's resting place; a place of peace; a sanctuary. Jim's stardom haunted him during his life; why should he have to continue to endure that after his death? Let's respect his final resting place...
---Georgene

I would NOT want to see a shop selling Doors stuff outside Pere Lachaise. I've never been there but from the pictures I've seen its a beautiful place full of rich history. A Doors souvenir shop would be too damn tacky!
---Dave

No! I don't think that a store opened up at the gates of Pere Lachaise would be a very good idea. I think it would be very disrespectful as after all it is a cemetery! People are still being buried there, and would'nt be fair to people going there paying their respects to their loved ones. I also feel that Pere Lachaise, and Rue Beauteillis have only just got over the crazy period in the early 90's when you had the famous riot in 1991, where the cemetery guards, were threatened and were unable to do their job and had to result to riot police using tear gas to disperse the crowd!!! You should also remember that Jim was almost evicted from the cemetery in 2001.
Please do'nt think that my views are narrow-minded I am a very big fan of Jim and The Doors and visited Paris two years ago with my mother who is also a fan of The doors (She got me into the band and remembers The Doors from the 60's. We had a bad experience at the cafe you mentioned. We went to the Pere Lachaise area in the early evening on the first night. We had 4 drinks, which came to 40 Euros! plus a man who cleans the cafe and does guided tours in Pere Lachaise invited us up to his bedroom!!! Thinking back, we think what happened was really funny but it was'nt at the time. I think perhaps you should warn people of this place. We were very lucky and managed get out of a difficult situation! but another female on their own might not be so lucky.
---Amanda

I just do not think it is right for any commercial transactions at the gate to a cemetery. Cemeteries are sacred places and should be respected. Therefore, I vote NO.
---Joan

NO! I just visited Jim's grave for the first time this week. It was nice to finally be as close to Jim's physical presence as I will ever be. It was also very nice to pay my personal respects in honor of what the music of the Doors and the poetry of Jim means to me. But I also know that a "shop", although very much a place that I would like to visit, is not appropriate for the gates of Pere Lechaise. It is a very nice cemetary to visit in a beautiful city, but not only would such a shop be inappropriate, it would also be disrespectful to the others who lie there. Besides, I don't think Jim would approve, as his lyrics are paeans to the rejection of material superficiality that such a shop would represent.
---Brian

A store to tell trinkets and fan memorabilia near the gates of a cemetery.
OK I say halt that silly idea don't do it, what the hell for anyway you had over 30 years to do it why now.?
Judging from what I have read from books about Jim and what his wild personality at times was like, I don't feel he would have wanted it that way, he was a special non materialistic kind of person he did not horde stuff.
He gave more to people then he took it seems just from what I read about him so far.
We have a world wide network to reach fans all across the globe right here right now the INTERNET, when somebody goes there to Paris to see Jim's grave like I want to do one day I am already a fan, I go on eBay to buy stuff I go to your fan website and might get what I need from time to time.
---Tony

MY God ...whats this world coming to?This idea amounts to sacrilege in my book.Beyond tacky.I could go on and on.Who is the freakin moron who thought of this.He deserves a public flogging!NO DOORS STORE!
---DJ

Dear God NO! I've been and it was bad enough the grave being surrounded by fences because of disrespectful "fans" don't commercialise it anymore, respect the memory don't turn it into anymore of tourist attraction than it already is.
---Claire

Bad, tacky, loathsome idea. In other words, no. Although, if you built it, you could probably power it off the electricity generated by Morrison spinning in his grave.
---Stephen

I am absolutely against more commerce at Pere Lachaise's. Everything around there has always turned into a circus and it is no doubt that the reason why there are barriers around Jim's grave today, is just because of this. I say be respectful for everyone burried there and their poor families and go sell you cups and T-shirts elsewhere. You are very easily reachable on the internet and there are no reasons for this other than to make more dough.
---Johanna

I believe strongly against opening a Doors store at the Gates of the Pere Lechaise Cemetry. I havent been there personally but a friend of mine who visited Jims grave told me how distastefull the experience already was i.e. graffiti and the lack of respect for other people buried there and their mourners/families. I think Jim himself would be disgusted and extremely embarassed if he knew there was a suggestion of opening a Doors store outside the place where he wanted to be buried and left in peace amongst many of his idols and fellow artists. Ironically in the end Jim sought respite and solitude in Paris away from the lifestyle of the rock star and LA - DONT bring it back to him now at his place of burial!
