The 21st Century Doors:
      Molson Park, Barrie, Ont. Canada

First, I hope the newly reformed Doors continue performing so that the fans everywhere can see them. I was lucky enough to witness both of their performances at The Harley-Davidson 100th Anniversary Open Road Tour shows in Fontana,California and Barrie,Ontario. I was amazed by how passionate the crowds were at both shows. Jim Morrison and John Densmore might not have been present but that didn't stop the crowds from enjoying one of the classic rock & roll bands of all time.

At the Fontana show there seemed to be a feeling out process going on within the band and also minor technical problems; Ian's head-set was not working and he finally discarded it. But at the Barrie show everything went flawlessly. Robby Krieger has all the fire that fueled the hits he wrote so long ago burning brightly and from his first note it was shown lighting the Canadian night.

Ray Manzarek was steady as Gibraltar, his keyboards meshed with Robby's guitar as if it were the summer of '67 all over again. The bottom end was handled expertly by Angelo Barbera from Robby's touring band. He stayed in the background and let his bass's thump let everyone know he was there.

The second hardest job of the night fell on the very capable shoulders of Stewart Copeland of Police fame. He rose to the occasion as he had in Fontana with an interpretation of John Densmore's drum playing that reminded everyone of how important John's contribution to the unique Doors’ sound had been.

The hardest job of the night could have been Ian Astbury's, but as in Fontana he didn't try to do a Jim Morrison show. Instead he put his all into singing songs that obviously mean something to him. In his own special way he made the crowd remember what was great and irreplaceable about Jim and he opened their eyes to all that could be very special about a New Doors project. Ian was more relaxed at the Barrie,ON show and really worked the crowd well. The audience made up of Harley riders, die-hard Doors fans and throngs of young people ate it up. When Ian asked "when we wanted the world " he got his reply in an earth shaking "NOW."

The hardest job of the night fell on the crowd and how it would receive this hard-playing band of rock musicians. Would they judge them against a past that can never again be? Or would they accept this band of Doors, old and new, for what they were: A group of like-minded individuals who wanted to play some great songs for an audience that was dying to hear them? I had previously seen Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger perform as solo acts. Robby and his band played inspired renditions of The Doors’ hits as well as his solo material. Ray accompanied Michael McClure's poetry the first time in Ann Arbor, MI. In Paris on July 3rd, 2001 at the Theatre les Bouffes du Nord he played a couple of Doors songs during the 30th Anniversary tribute to Jim Morrison’s death.

I can't speak for anyone else, but to have seen The Doors live twice in any incarnation is a dream come true. I hope that these pictures from the Barrie show can give some glimpse at how fantastic it was.
