Harley-Davidson Open Road Tour California Speedway, Fontana, CA September 6, 2002 by Marcus Cato |

G'day (hi) from "Down Under" - Sydney, Australia! My name is Marcus Cato I was fortunate enough to attend the very first Doors gig at Fontana, CA. And I'm still buzzing!
When I first heard that the Doors were getting together again, I just had to be there - even if it meant coming from the other side of the World and back again, all in just five days - and putting a huge dent in my savings! I ran the idea past a life-long mate that I went to school with, and he felt the same. We simply had to be there. But where the hell's Fontana, we thought...!!?? We did our homework, booked our flights (14 hours on a plane!) arranged for a red Mustang convertible (what else!) to be waiting for us at LAX, and upon arrival, headed straight for Jim's old stamping ground of Venice Beach. With "LA Woman" screeching from the car's CD player, we had begun our journey of a lifetime. We were headed for a Doors reunion concert! I've been a Doors fan since the day, aged 15, I first heard "Break On Through". That was 35 years ago! But the closest I've been to seeing the Doors (that is, Ray, Robbie and John) was when Ray came to Oz on a promotional visit a couple of years ago, and at Pere-Lachaise in Paris, France, to pay homage to Jim. We spent a wonderful couple of days at Venice soaking up the atmosphere, and then on the day of the concert, headed for Fontana and a dream come true. Upon arrival in Fontana, we mingled with other Doors fans (and America's best bikers!) whilst enjoying the Harley Davidson 100 year anniversary exhibition - a fantastic gig in itself! A rumour spread that John may not be performing with the band. We were naturally disappointed with the news as I always believed John's drumming was second to none, and that he would be irreplaceable. My friend asked who I thought would/should replace John. My reply (and this is a true story of self indulgence!) was Stu Copeland, ex the Police. No John, but second best! There were a couple of support bands before the Doors to whet our appetite, and when the time came, everyone just knew they were in for the time (and gig) of their lives. The atmosphere was electric. What followed couldn't have been scripted any better. The house announcer..."Is everybody in? Is everybody in? "Let the ceremony begin"!!! The place erupted! The house announcer again with an all too familiar cry..."ladies and gentleman, from Los Angeles California, THE DOOOOORS"!! Then the first song. The anthem. Roadhouse Blues! I simply died and went to Heaven. Whether it was hype or adrenalin, I don't know, but the sound blew me away. This was the Doors, and their music was simply awesome. Better than sex - maybe. Apart from the birth of my children and parachuting from a plane, this was the best experience of my life. What a wonderful night of Doors entertainment. This was pure Doors. No new, self-indulgent stuff, just pure Doors. I'm sure we heard every track from all six Doors albums. It seemed like it, anyway. The night went too quickly, but the memories will linger forever.
