The Doors 21st Century played at the Chicago Theatre on June 24, 2003.
My expectations of this show were pretty high, to say the least. The group
hit the stage about 8:30, to the applause of a full house. The opening chords
of “Roadhouse Blues” resonated through the building as everyone got on
their feet and started singing along. After “Roadhouse” came “Break On
Through” including “Dead Cats, Dead Rats.” Ray remarked that it was
"good to be home" and they began what was possibly the best song of the
night: “When the Music's Over.” Ian jumped off the drum riser with a
fierce "YEAH!!" and the song went perfectly. The rest of the night had lots
of energy and emotion from both the band and the audience. Favorites like
“Crystal Ship,” “Back Door Man,” “People Are Strange,” “Moonlight Drive,”
“Spanish Caravan,” “LA Woman,” (during which the audience sang so loudly
you couldn't hear Ian) “Maggie M'Gill” and “Five To One” were played, as
well as some others, before the band walked off the stage. The sound of thunder
filled the theatre and the band walked back on stage to play “Riders On The
Storm.” Four encores followed including “Peace Frog,” “Not To Touch The
Earth,” “Light My Fire” and ending with “Soul Kitchen.”
Two guys jumped on stage although they looked pretty amazed when Robby and Ian pulled them away from the clutches of Security, so I don't think it was planned. I'm still a little in shock, so I can't remember all the songs they played, but the show lasted over two and a half hours. Robby and Ray played like only they can with extended solos and unbelievable interaction. The drummer and bassist were also good, but Ian's performance shocked me. I had seen the group on TV and thought Ian had a bit of a country drawl to his voice but it was easy to mistake him for the Lizard King himself. The whole night was mesmerizing. I recommend anyone with any doubts should forget them and see The Doors 21st Century in concert. No one can match The Doors in intensity and the songs are as tight as ever, if not tighter. The band sounded great: the show was incredible. If you haven't yet, see The Doors 21st Century—you’ll be happy you did.
