The 21st Century Doors:
Scene Pavilion,
Cleveland, OH
June 21, 2003

by George W. White II

I had never seen The Doors in concert before but had always wanted to. I have listened and been fascinated by them for a long time. At my wedding four years ago we had a live band and I sang "Roadhouse Blues." It was a great experience for me. Jim Morrison died before I was born so I never had the opportunity to see him, only on videos. My wife and I were very excited about the concert; in fact I was overwhelmed.

We jammed to The Doors the whole way to downtown Cleveland and finally arrived at the concert venue minutes after the gates opened. There were many people already buying souvenirs and partying. The Crowd was definitely mixed, from young to old. We sat in our seats as The place filled up and at 8:40 p.m. the Jimi Hendrix music stopped Playing while the lights dimmed then the "Carmina Burana: Introduction" Song came on while The Doors of the 21st Century walked on stage. There were goose bumps and the crowd went wild. A guy came out and introduced "Ladies and Gentlemen, Live from Los Angeles, California, The Doors," then straight into "Roadhouse Blues." This was followed by "Break on Through," "When The Music's Over," "Love Me Two Times" and "Moonlight Drive." They played a short rendition of "Louie Louie" then Ray went into a little solo on keyboards. Ian came back on and went into "Wild Child." After that Ray talked a little and introduced their new song "Cops Talk" and said that they would be out with a new album end of year or beginning of next. This was followed by "Whiskey Bar," "Back Door Man" and "Five to One" then Ian and Robby sat on stools and sang "Crystal Ship" along with "People Are Strange." Robby did a solo followed by "Spanish Caravan" and at that point someone threw onto the stage a large American flag with Jim Morrison pictured in the middle. Ian picked it up and put it by the drums so everyone could see. "Maggie M'Gill" was next and the last song was "LA Woman" a very long and great version played with the video. When Jim Morrison appeared on screen the crowd went nuts. The guys left the stage only to return for the first encore "Riders On The Storm" then a long version of "Light My Fire" and on into Bob Marley's "Get Up, Stand Up" and back to "Light My Fire." A few women jumped on stage but were escorted off and The Doors left once more only to return again and sing their final song "Soul Kitchen." The crowd roared so loud that it was unbelievable. Ian Astbury did an awesome job; he looked, sang and acted like Jim Morrison. He was having a lot of fun with Ray and Robby and the crowd. It was like seeing Jim Morrison in concert, that's how awesome Ian was. He jumped off the stage at one point and danced like Morrison. Ray and Robby looked great!

This was one of the best concerts of my life and I can't wait to see them again. Until then I'll have to Break On Through being a Wild Child while I Ride The Storm out on a Moonlight Drive and Light My Fire at the next Whiskey Bar with my L.A. Woman where she'll Love Me Two Times!
