The 21st Century Doors:
DTE Energy Music Ctr,

June 20, 2003

Good Friday 2003 is when tickets went on sale for The Doors 21st Century concert at DTE. I clicked on the "Best Seat Available" icon to see how close I could get to the stage. Imagine my surprise when I saw that I could buy tickets in the front row for $250 a piece. I pondered over this for a couple of seconds wondering if it was worth the price. Face it, Morrison is gone and Densmore is suing trying the get the whole tour stopped. Yet I knew Ray and Robby would play nothing less than their very best so I purchased two front row tickets and hoped for the best.

June 20th couldn't come fast enough. More lawsuits ensued by Jim and Pamela's parents as well as Stewart Copeland yet the show was Destined to go on (Copeland's suit was "settled" a few days prior to their performance at DTE). In the meantime, I had learned that the purchase price for the front row tickets also meant VIP parking, a free concert shirt and a chance to meet the band after the concert.

We arrived at 5:30, a full two hours before the concert was scheduled to begin. The people at DTE were kind enough to admit us early, which allowed us to hear Ian doing a soundcheck singing "Break On Through." At that moment we knew that $250 per ticket was a bargain. We took our seats promptly at 7:20 and waited almost an hour for the band to come on stage. Once they did (around 8:15), we never sat down.

The Doors played “Break On Through,” “Crystal Ship,” “Five To One,” “LA Woman,” “When The Music's Over,” “Light My Fire,” “Back Door Man,” “Wild Child,” Roadhouse Blues” and almost everything we wanted to hear (they didn't play “Peace Frog” or “The End”). They never missed a beat and Ian did such an awesome job dancing around like Morrison used to and putting such emotion into his performance that we felt blessed to see him up there with the legends. As far as the people to the left of us, well they only seemed to be there to purchase overpriced beer. In fact I bet when they told their girlfriends that they were going to take them to see The Doors, their women thought that they were going to a lumberyard to pick something out for the house. I was bummed that they weren't into the show but the people to the right of us were just as entranced as we were. One of the camera crew members grabbed my license plate to film it (my personal plate is "Doors" and I brought it for the band to autograph) only to return it a few minutes later and get a shot of my wife and I holding it up to the crowd. Once Densmore sees it, I am sure that he will be dragging me into court to have me change my plate as I am using their name like Robby and Ray.

The band played for over an hour and forty-five minutes only to come out for an encore that lasted over 20 minutes. I know the first encore song was “Riders On The Storm” but much more than that, we found ourselves on "crowd control" duty as there was a massive stage rush. People in the front row fled as the people in the back made their way on to the stage. It was pandemonium...Jim would have loved the chaos. Once the concert ended, we got to go backstage to meet Ray, Ian, and Robby for autographs. What a great bunch of guys they are! They autographed shirts, books, guitars, albums and anything else a fan would ask them to sign plus if you had a camera, they'd have their picture taken with you! Unfortunately Ray was a little bummed as someone that rushed the stage stole part of their drum set. If you are the guilty party that did this and happen to be reading my review: Thanks, idiot (and that is so censored) for giving the band negative feelings about their Detroit fans, you no good thief!

Bottom line is that if you are a true Doors fan go see this band even if it means traveling to a different state to do so. I know if they play another venue close to my state I want to witness once again the magic that they still possess. Hats off to Ian for doing such an incredible job filling in for the late, great Jim Morrison. Ian, you did the man proud— from your singing to your every movement. Ray and Robby couldn't have found a better performer for such a feat! And to Ray and Robby, you deserve all that's good in life. Thanks for making our dreams to see you perform come true. There is no doubt that The Doors still rock!
