I enjoyed the show in West Palm Beach immensely.
My perspective: I've loved the music since the first time I heard 'Break on Through' courtesy of WNEW-FM. In fact, hearing anything from the first album can easily take me to the NYC of 67-68 when you'd hear it all over The Village. ('Strange Days' has long been my favorite Doors studio album.) But my listening pleasure is most definitely not limited to, or even rooted in nostalgia. The music absolutely stands on its own. I had the opportunity to see the original line-up perform live, and I've bought several live CDs recently from Bright Midnight which are also fine, fine listening. I'd also seen a Doors tribute band several months before the West Palm show; I think it was Soft Parade. That was a fun way to pass an evening. They had some facets of things like keyboard and guitar sounds, and licks down pretty thoroughly. But what a difference the real deal was. The 21st Century Doors thundered. They did it was a ton of conviction and a ton of musicianship. And that's what put it across, despite the absent Morrison. All around me, you could see the long-time fans were ecstatic that the band sounded as good as it did. I very much enjoyed the addition of a full-time bass player. That added to the complexity of the sound and the ass-kicking quotient of the rhythm section. Ian Astbury was a very agreeable front man for this new edition of the band. Ray and Robbie have never come close to getting their due as musicians, as innovators, as arrangers, but it was all there on display that night. Looking forward to the studio album. When it arrives, I'll be expecting something showing the band's DNA, but with a fresh new flavor, a contemporary take on things. But I'd also love to get a live concert CD/DVD from the recent tour. Thank you especially for playing 'Soul Kitchen' and 'When The Music's Over'. I traveled 200 miles to the show and I hope it's not too long before I get to do it again. My wife also loves Doors music and never got the chance to see a live show. It was great sharing this with her.
