In 1968 The Doors played Philadelphia at the Spectrum. I play guitar
and my bass player said to me, The Doors are coming, let’s go. Would
you believe I said, Naw…Jimi Hendrix is coming. Besides, I could
only pay for so many concerts. Well, I’ve always regretted missing the
original Doors. And I never, ever thought I’d see them again. Well, let
me just say very few concerts bring tears of joy to my eyes but this one
did for the first three songs—a steady stream of tears just rolled down my
face. It was a combination of awe, respect and love for a band that brought
so many memories back to the forefront of my mind. I would advise all
of you who are undecided to break on thru to the other side and DO NOT
miss this golden opportunity to see and hear the closest thing to the original
Doors you will ever have. Ah, but Jim Morrison was The Doors she cried!
Yes he was, but so were Ray and Robby and John. Which brings us to the
unique reason why this worked. Ian Astbury not only looks close enough
to Jim, for me, but sounds more like him then he looks like him. Go figure!
Now the real compliment is that Ian must have had a true love for Jim
Morrison`s work and vocal style because he exudes praise and respect in
every word he sings. From “Crystal Ship” to the loudest yell, and though
aware he’s on critical display, I could tell that he sings ‘em like he’s loving
every minute of it and isn’t doing an impersonation but rather the best tribute
that Jim could possibly have. I loved it, I will see it again, and I just have to
thank The Doors, Ray and Robby, the support band Ty and Angelo, and
most of all Ian, for giving me the closest experience to what the original
Doors must have been like. Thank you guys! P. S. Afterwards, I talked to Ian
and Angelo. I am blown away by the warmth and love they show their new
and old fans. Definitely with LOVE!
