The 21st Century Doors:
The Tower Theater,
Philadelphia, PA
April 26, 2003

by Scott Knouse Jr.

We arrived to see the 21st Century Doors at about 6:00, but the doors did not open until 7:00 with the show starting at 8:00. We found our seats, and at about 8:25 a voice announced, "Ladies and Gentlemen, from Los Angeles California, The Doors!" The crowd went wild as Ian, Robby and Ray took the stage. Robby was dressed in full camo, Ray wearing his usual suit, and Ian in all black.

I was skeptical about any person attempting to sing with The Doors, but about two minutes into “Roadhouse Blues” I had decided that Ian was a terrific choice. He sang and acted the part, his screams were impressive, he danced the Indian dance and he would often turn and sing with his back to the crowd. The band was very well received; the crowd sang along with every song. They played basically the same set as the rest of the tour. “Light My Fire,” with about a 10-minute solo by Ray and Robby, was just too great to even put into words. They played "Cops Talk" which is a new song; it had the Doors sound to it for sure! I was also pleased to hear hits like "Peace Frog” and “Wild Child" but they didn't just play the radio hits--they mixed it up a bit!

During “Roadhouse Blues” a girl rushed onto the stage and faked fellatio on Ian. Later in the show a girl came up and danced around Ian for about a minute then when she didn't leave Ian said into the mic: "I'm not the real thing you freak!" During the second encore (“Soul Kitchen”) several girls rushed on the stage. While Ian was dancing with one of these girls, a cop came up to remove her. Ian threw himself between the girl and the cop. He held his arms out, not letting the cop get by, then after the cop escorted her off stage The Doors broke away from the instrumental and Ian grabbed the mic: "The cop says it's time to close...I know I have to go.…” The show was over. Words cannot do it justice. It moved me so much that I ordered tickets for the Cleveland show the next morning!!!
