Philadelphia Tower Theater April 26, 2003 |

I attended the Tower Theater concert in Upper Darby (Philadelphia) Pa.,
with my wife, my brother, and a friend. We arrived early and found a
place to eat nearby and got to the theater at 7:45. We had good seats in
the 10th row and waited patiently for the band to hit the stage. At 8:45
a local DJ said those famous words I couldn't wait to hear: "Ladies and
Gentlemen, from Los Angeles California, The Doors!" The sold-out
theater went wild and The Doors 21st Century went into "Roadhouse
Blues." The crowd was incredibly receptive and the band got pumped
and followed with stirring renditions of "Break on Through," "When
the Music's Over" and "Love Me Two Times." A couple of times I
closed my eyes and it felt like being transported back in time some
35 years. Ian Astbury didn't try to be Jim but he was outstanding. Ray
was Ray and Robby (even better than I expected) was Robby. It was an
interesting touch adding a bass player, Angelo Barbera, and drummer,
Ty Dennis, was up to the task. They stayed in the background adding to
the aura rather than diminishing it. Other songs included "Moonlight
Drive," “Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar),” segueing into "Back Door
Man," a new tune called "Cops Talk" (I think), "Five To One,"
"Maggie McGill," "L.A. Woman," and "Light My Fire" complete
with Ray's solo and Robby's incredible lead. The crowd wouldn't let them
leave and a video of some bad weather played as they returned and went
into "Riders On The Storm." Ray asked for requests and claimed to hear
"Peace Frog" so that's what they played. One more encore and it was
"Soul Kitchen" and one of the best shows I have ever seen. We were all in
agreement the new Doors were more than worth seeing.
