The 21st Century Doors:

New York City, NY

I’m 16 and in a world full of rap and crap like it I have thankfully fallen into the good graces of The Doors. I’ve seen the Stones, Clapton, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, the Who, the Dead, the Allman Brothers and more but none could compare to The Doors 21st Century reincarnation.

They came on late as usual and when "Carmina Burana" came on I finally got to see Ray and Robby. Jim’s lion photo flashed and received a huge ovation. Jim’s been my idol since I was a boy and I was skeptical to see how Ian could do but he did a great job.

They opened up with “Roadhouse Blues” with a video of highway driving and bars. Ray spoke of how great it was to be back in NY and went into “Break On Through” In the middle of “Break On Through” they went into "Dead Cats, Dead Rats" which I’ve never heard in the middle of the song before. Next was “When The Music’s Over” which I figured would be played later which was amazing. “Moonlight Drive” was next, followed by “Horse Latitudes.”

Then they introduced the new song "Cops Talk" which was great...a real Doors feel to it. They spoke of their new album and the contributors to it. Next was “Five To One” which they said the Carson Daly show wouldn’t play because it was too controversial due to the war in Iraq. Then Ray said he would love some whisky which led us into “Alabama Song” and then a video of Willie Dixon came on the screen and they went straight into “Backdoor Man.”

Then Robby, Ray and Ian played “Crystal Ship” and “People Are Strange” With Robby on flamenco he went into an impressive solo before “Spanish Caravan.” Next was “Love Me Two Times” then into “LA Woman” with the “LA Woman” movie in the background. The crowd went crazy as Jim was shown riding his bike and in his Mustang. They ended with “Light My Fire” with a show stopping ten-minute solo by Ray and Robby.

They thanked everyone and came back out to a fog filled stage which was echoing with thunder and then played an amazing version of “Riders” and closed the first encore with “Peace Frog.” Ian gave a speech of how he wasn’t there to replace anyone just to give the Doors fans what they wanted. He said if he wasn’t on stage he’d be in the crowd. The lights went back on but soon shut off as they came back and played “Soul Kitchen.”

A woman came on stage and began to strip and got pulled off after a minute or two. The night ended with Ray thanking NY for a great show. All in all it was amazing. Ian did a great job and seems to be really comfortable in his position. Robby was amazing and Ray stole the show with his solos. Even though there were two Doors down I finally got to see my favorite band ever and it was worth the wait.
