The 21st Century Doors:
Dodge Theatre, Phoenix, AZ
March 26, 2003

by Jamie & Rick Volner

We just saw The Doors of the 21st Century on March 26th in Phoenix, Arizona. It was an awesome show! My husband saw The Doors w/ Jim Morrison back in 1967 in Tucson. At first he was skeptical of the Phoenix show but Ian Astbury certainly won him and me over.

In no way did Ian represent himself as Jim Morrison, in fact he admitted to being Morrison's fan. Nor did he try to undermine but very tastefully honored Morrison. Ian presented Doors songs with his own flair but also with the spirit of Jim. Only someone who truly knew and appreciated another's music could do justice to Jim the way Ian did.

Ian will never replace Jim Morrison and I do not believe he wants to. It's as if he's honored to be in such a position. Neither Manzarek nor Kreiger is trying to replace Morrison. Whatever their reasoning, it is wonderful to have Jim's music circulating again live in concert and to "feel" his music even if it's performed by another.

Our hats are off to The Doors. We thank Ray and Robby for bringing the music back and only wish that John could accompany them as well for he was sorely missed March 26th.
