The 21st Century Doors:
Dodge Theatre, Phoenix, AZ
March 26, 2003

by Robert Dahlin

Wednesday night The Doors of the 21st Century performed an inspiring set at the Dodge Theatre that few will ever forget!

From the opening chords of 'Roadhouse Blues,' the crowd was on their feet and soaking up the blues that only Jim Morrison could have provided. Ian Astbury crooned powerfully into the mic as he danced that 'Indian' dance that Jim used to do. 'Break On Through' followed, bringing Back memories of the days when The Doors first broke out on the scene in 1967. The crowd roared to life when LA Woman touched their ears! The huge screen behind the stage showed Ray's 'LA Woman' video with footage of Jim Morrison's 1967 Mustang Fastback roaring down the streets of LA!

'Strange Days,' 'Alabama Song,' 'People Are Strange,' 'Backdoor Man,' 'Five To One' and 'Love Me Two Times' continued to stoke the audience with a performance as powerful as I have ever seen at a rock concert! The performance of 'The Ghost Song' had real Indians doing a pow wow on stage as The Doors played on to the poetry of Jim Morrison. 'Light My Fire' was especially riveting with Ray stretching out the piano as only he could. When Robby's turn came, you could hear the chords as clearly as on the album and the two of them together made magic just like in the old days.

The encore came with 'Riders On The Storm' crashing thunder and Ray Manzarek plunking the piano as if it was really raining! 'Maggie M'Gill' came next with a harmonica solo that would have made Jim proud! The Doors really rocked on this one having the blues close out the concert. As everyone was leaving the theatre, suddenly Ray Manzarek announced that they had "time for one more." As soon as the first chords to 'Soul Kitchen' wafted over the loudspeakers, the crowd rushed to get back to their seats!

It was the long version The Doors used to do in the old days as an encore! As Ray and Robby got down, the crowd began to dance and rush the stage as they rarely do nowadays. As Ian roared into the microphone, the crowd began to climb on stage and dance with The Doors. Soon there were so many people onstage, there was room for no more and the girls began tugging at Ian and Ray while they performed. "The cop says it's time to go now! I guess we better go now! We'd really like to stay here all night, all night!" Then, The Doors left the stage and even Jim smiled a little from above!
