The 21st Century Doors:
'Last Call With Carson Daly'
New York City, NY
February 12, 2003

On Wednesday, February 12th The Doors recorded their performance for 'Last Call With Carson Daly' at NBC studios in NYC to a crowd of dedicated fans. I was there...

An NBC studio is a cold environment for The Doors to play in. The audience was herded in like cattle after a three- hour wait and cued in when it was time to laugh or applaud. But when it was time for The Doors to perform, there was no need for any cue because the crowd (predominantly Doors fans) went wild, the atmosphere suddenly shifted from a cold corporate setting to a warm, friendly one.

Ray Manzarek came onstage dressed sharply in slacks and a leisure coat to greet the audience who in turn sang Happy Birthday to him. Robby Krieger and the rest of the band joined Ray on stage. Robby was dressed in his unique way as always in a green and black leopard print shirt, his diamond-studded guitar strap across it and green camouflage cargo plants.

They played a short but powerful two-song set that started with Roadhouse Blues and finished with Five to One. It was refreshing to see Ray and Robby play together, two friends jamming together for old times sake. They enjoyed themselves and the connection between the two was obvious. Krieger improvised back and forth with Manzarek. He looked as if in a trance, eyes closed and lips moving with every note played. It is phenomenal to watch them perform.

Ian Astbury did a great show and seemed humble throughout the whole set. When someone from the audience would yell out something like, "You rock Ian," he'd clasp his hands and nod to them. He knows that no one could fill Jim's shoes.

Although everyone missed Densmore and Copeland, but the drummer who filled in (Ty Dennis) added a new rhythmic twist to Roadhouse Blues and Five to One. The bass player rounded out the sound while remaining in the background.

The Doors looked very pleased from the crowd's reaction at the end of their set. After Carson Daly said goodnight, the band stayed behind to sign autographs. The wait was long and tiresome but for free tickets, those dedicated fans thought it was definitely worth the trouble.

The show is set to air on Thursday, February 20th at 1:30 am (eastern). DON'T MISS IT!
