I was there! I saw The Doors live! I first heard The Doors
at the age of 13 in the summer of 1979 and I've been a fan
of theirs ever since.
The show was in a small venue, which made the show extremely personal. I felt as though Ray, Robby, Stewart and Ian were playing just for me. The stage had a big screen behind it and as the band entered the stage (Ray and Robby first followed by Stewart, then Ian last), the young lion photo of Jim Morrison was cast upon the screen. It was a very fitting homage to Jim. They were introduced in the usual way, "Ladies and Gentlemen - from Los Angeles California, The Doors!" The crowd roared and got even louder as Robby ripped into the opening licks of "Roadhouse Blues." They followed with "Break on Through," then played "When The Music's Over." What a great beginning it was! Later in the gig, they played a new, sleek version of "Strange Days." Ray told us this was one of the songs they are working on for a new album that would be released later this year. One very cool moment during the concert was when Ray announced they would play "The Ghost Song" written by James Douglas Morrison. Two authentically dressed Indians then came out on the stage and danced to the music. It was a perfect tribute to Jim's love of Shamanism. They played two encores: The first was "Riders On The Storm," followed up with "Maggie M'Gill" (this was awesome to hear live - one of my favorites!) When they came back on stage one last time, Ray announced, "We have one more in us." And boy did they ever! They rocked us with a great version of "Soul Kitchen" as their last number! Robby walked across the stage to play next to Ray; Ray got up and stood on his seat and played the organ with his both hands and one foot. The crowd roared, now completely satisfied. Ray thanked us a number of times for our support. If we could only express how much it meant to us. Hopefully our applause, screams, whistles and shouts of sheer excitement got our message across. It was incredible, but couldn't help feeling like an old friend was missing. So... wherever you are Jim, we missed you! Seeing your friends perform in your honor made me very proud to be a Doors fan.
